Architect
Santiago Calatrava
BDA were commissioned by Santiago Calatrava to collaborate on the development of a number elements within the ambitious Sharq Crossing Masterplan.
The unique $12 billion, 12km long highway development includes a series of bridges and tunnels, vehicular attraction ride, stations, pedestrian bridges, recreational facility and retail units. The project connects the Airport Area, the West Bay Financial District and the Cultural City.
BDA developed, with Santiago Calatrava, the Vitreous Enamel cladding panels for the tunnel lining, tunnel entrances, multi-level station glazing and cladding, marina balustrades, and retail buildings.
The cladding/glazing elements of the buildings, stations and bridges feature a complex geometry of welded steel components. This provides a unique visual appearance while solving challenging design requirements.
The station glazing system includes bespoke rectangular steel stick-curtain walling with toggle glazed curtain walling with rainscreen Vitreous Enamel cladding. The retail units include large format glazing with t-profiled steel stick-curtain walling.
